Corey Wieneke: What Happened To Him?

In 1992, Corey Wieneke, a 22-year-old young man, was discovered dead in his room. Police were certain he was murdered, but it wasn’t until 2017 that they were able to follow up on the tip.

Corey Wieneke was murdered 25 years ago, and his killer was sentenced to life in prison. The cold case was ultimately solved, and the victim and his family finally received the justice they deserved.

Corey Wieneke: What Happened To Him?

Jody Hotz, Corey Wieneke’s fiancee, called 911 on October 13, 1992 to report his death. When the first responders arrived at his home, they discovered his body in his room, which was covered in blood.

With a quick glance, it was clear that he had been slain by blunt force and a beating. When they inquired about Jody’s location, she replied that she was at work. She was cleared out as a suspect after receiving an alibi from her coworkers.

It was also suspected that it was a robbery or a house invasion, but this was quickly dismissed. One of the reporters reported seeing a bloodied aluminum baseball bat on the side of the road close the next morning, which turned out to be a murder weapon.

Through inquiry, investigators were able to locate Annette Cahill (Hazen at the time). According to another Wieneke coworker, she caught up with Corey on the morning of October 13 (around the time when the pub was closing) and even had a disagreement with him.

But, before officials could summon Annette for questioning, she showed up at the police station and admitted to having a casual connection with Wieneke. She was furious that morning since they had planned to meet up, but she caught a glimpse of him with another female coworker, making her envious.

However, she stated that they later reconciled and even hooked up. However, she went on to work on a roofing job with her sister-in-law, who backed up her claim. She also mentioned that she went to his house that morning to get the book she had left, but he did not answer the door.

She was also subjected to a polygraph examination, but she showed no signs of guilt and was released. As a result, his death was left unsolved until 2017, when Jessica Becker remembered a traumatic childhood experience.

On NBC’s Dateline, there’s an update on the Corey Wieneke murder case

An update on Corey Wieneke’s murder is featured in one of NB’s Dateline episodes titled The Black Candle Confession. It tells how the man was slain and how, despite repeated attempts, authorities were unable to uncover the killer until a lead was discovered in 2017.

Becker revealed to the detectives that she was Annette’s niece’s friend. She had gone to her house for a sleepover when she was nine years old and heard Cahill crying while holding a black candle and apologizing to him, saying she never meant to hurt him.

Becker told her mother about the confession, but they were scared to report it because of the murder’s savagery. Despite giving a different version of events after being interrogated by authorities, the accused was found guilty in 2019 and sentenced to 50 years in jail.

What happened to Annette Cahill?

Annette Dee Cahill was found guilty of second-degree murder by the Iowa Supreme Court on October 13, 1992, after she fatally stabbed her 22-year-old boyfriend Corey Wieneke.

She eluded protection and police for years before they eventually caught up with her in 2019. After a failed trial in early 2019, she was found guilty of second-degree murder in a retrial on September 19, 2019.

KWQC reports that during a sentencing hearing in Muscatine County District Court on November 22, 2019, District Court Judge Patrick McElyea sentenced her to the maximum 50-year prison sentence.
