Ryan was born to his father Edward Ryan who was an honest creation employee and his mother, who was an Italian immigrant housewife. Jim attended a Benedictine-run Saint Procopius Academy (now Benet Academy). Upon graduating from that institute, Ryan enrolled at Saint Procopius College (now Benedictine University), wherein he acquired his bachelor of arts(BA) diploma in political technology in 1968. He then went directly to Chicago-Kent College of Law wherein he acquired his J.D. in 1971. He sharpened his political wit after graduating with his final degree and worked at many governmental bodies, gaining lots of experience in politics, cases, and handling.

Illinois-based politician Jim Ryan married his longtime friend and love of his life, Marie Ryan. The pair had dated for several years before they tied the marriage bond and commenced their healthy married life. He has been blessed with their six children.

Ryan and his family’s life have been laced with many major and minor issues, health complications, and brief illnesses. In 1996, Jim Ryan was hospitalized with a degrading Stage 2 non-Hodgkin lymphoma and commenced his chemotherapy. Similarly, in October 1997, Jim’s wife Marie Ryan suffered a complicated coronary heart attack that nearly took her life. The pair were just strolling outside of their home, not much farther from their residence when Marie suddenly collapsed and was rushed to hospital. The cause of his heart attack was later found to be a deadly virus in her system.

In January 1997, the youngest of Jim and Marie Ryan’s six children, 12 years old daughter Anne Marie, collapsed and died of a mild tumor. Likewise, on October 8, 2007, Ryan’s son Patrick Ryan tragically took his own life. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Ryan died suddenly on June 12th, 2022.
