Who Was Steve Fickinger?

Born in 1960, Steve Fickinger initially worked as a theater actor and then joined Disney as a temp mail-room worker. Fickinger attended New Trier High School for his formal education. He made appearances in commercials for Brown’s Chicken when he was there. Later, he rose to the position of director of creative development for Walt Disney Feature Animation, overseeing the creation of some of the studio’s most well-known animated features, including Mulan, Tarzan, Lilo and Stitch, and others.

He became a vice president of creative development for Disney’s Theatrical Group and oversaw multiple Broadway plays, including The Lion King, Aida, Newsies, and Aladdin. Steve left Disney in 2013 and established his own theatre production company, FickStern Productions. Dear Evan Hansen, a musical by Steven Levenson and composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, was the company’s first undertaking.

The main character of the musical was Evan Hansen, a high school senior with social anxiety who created a role for himself after a tragic event. It had its world premiere at Washington, D.C.’s Arena Stage before making its Broadway debut at the Music Box Theatre in December 2016. Positive reviews from reviewers and nine nominations for the 71st Tony Awards have been given to Dear Evan Hansen. Later, the musical was turned into a movie, but it bombed at the box office and got bad reviews. Fickinger is survived by his siblings Joan, Jan, Michael, and Emily.
