Just by looking at him, you could tell that he had been killed by a blunt force and beating. When they asked where Jody was, she told them she was at work. After her coworkers gave her an alibi, she was taken off the list of people who might have done it.
Police also thought it could have been a robbery or a break-in, but they quickly ruled those out. The next morning, one of the reporters found a bloody aluminum baseball bat on the road near the crime scene. It turned out that the bat was used to kill the person.
Investigators were able to find Annette Cahill, who was known at the time as Hazen, through their work. On the morning of October 13, when the bar was closing, she met up with Corey and got into an argument with him, according to Wieneke’s coworker.
But before the police could call Annette in for questioning, she went to the station and said that she and Wieneke were just dating. She was angry that morning because they had plans to hook up, but she saw him with another woman at work, which made her jealous.
But she said that they got along again and even slept together. But then she went to work on a roof with her sister-in-law, who agreed with what she said. She also said that she went to his house that morning to get the book she had left there, but he didn’t answer the door.
She also had to take a polygraph test, but it didn’t show that she did anything wrong, so she was let go. So, his death was a mystery until 2017, when Jessica Becker remembered a traumatic event from her childhood.
In an episode of NB’s Dateline called “The Black Candle Confession,” a new piece is shown about the murder of Corey Wieneke. It talks about how the man was killed and how, despite their best efforts, police couldn’t find the killer until 2017 when they got a clue.
Becker went to the police and told them she was friends with Annette’s niece’s friend. When she was nine, she went to her friend’s house for a sleepover and heard Cahill crying while holding a black candle and saying she was sorry for hurting him.
Becker told her mother about the confession, but they didn’t tell anyone because murder is so cruel. Even though the accused told the police a different story when they confronted her, she was found guilty and given a 50-year prison sentence in 2019.
Annette Dee Cahill was found guilty of second-degree murder by the Iowa Supreme Court. On October 13, 1992, she killed her 22-year-old boyfriend, Corey Wieneke, by beating him up.
She stayed away from protection and the police for a long time. In 2019, the police finally caught up with her. After her trial in early 2019 failed, she was found guilty of second-degree murder on September 19, 2019.
KWQC reports that on November 22, 2019, at a sentencing hearing in Muscatine County District Court, District Court Judge Patrick McElyea gave her the maximum 50-year prison sentence.
She must serve at least 35 years, or 70% of her sentence, before she can be released on parole. Even though she asked for a new trial, her request was turned down, and she is now in jail.
